Triggering memories

I'm convinced that once you lose someone you love, it's the little things that you miss the most. Tiny nuances of life that trigger memories.  Like this morning I am in line at McDonald's and hear the cook yell that he needs an order of gravy and biscuits.  And I stand there in line and start to cry. My dad loved McDonald's gravy and biscuits (only surpassed by his love of Hardee's-gag!). The man had an iron stomach and an appetite unlike anything I'd ever seen.  Yet he managed to maintain his size 32 waist his entire life (What an asshole! If you knew him, you'd know he wouldn't mind that I called him that.).

I miss that man as much today as I did 2 years ago.  The wound is not fresh, but it never heals. He was my idol and I try every day to be as much like him as possible.

On a similar note, if you haven't read the post that's making it's way around the web by Dax Sheppard, you should.  He recently lost his father to cancer and his story really spoke to me, as corny as that sounds.  A lot of what he said about his father was right on point.  You can read it here: Dax Sheppard
